Sweet Dissociation
This poem is about the cognitive dissonance we experience here in the 'safe' Western world meanwhile terrors and most specifically genocide are being perpetrated as a result of the system we too are entwined in. Tough Poets Review is a biannual print journal featuring the work of critically engaged writers and artists who elaborate on the legacy of their medium. We publish irreverent work with the aim of generating conversation that goes beyond exposition and instruction. Tough Poets believes this approach can be applied to our collective experience to confront the world with defiant optimism.
History Does Not Repeat By Itself
I wrote this poem when the United States first refused to sign the United Nations resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in December 2023—a minimal gesture which might nonetheless have affirmed that human rights still hold meaning within a global order purportedly founded upon them, and which might have stemmed the horrors now continuing to unfold in Gaza.
